Red River Bedlam

I know this blog has people from other than Oklahoma or Texas. Anyway after another dissapointing outing from the Sooners, all I can say is ain’t payback a bitch.

  1. I can’t speak for everyone on this blog, but, I think the interest in college football is not a high priority

Even though I was born, raised, and still live in Oklahoma, I lost my O.U. fanaticism when college football turned into a commercial (legal and illegal, i.e. gambling) business not unlike the NFL and all the other professional sports that are money driven
.. My revelation came when the Big 8 was turned into the Big 12 for no other reason than profits and the OU/Nebraska game was no longer played on Thanksgiving Day

I grew-up celebrating turkey day with a large family gathering sharing a feast and then sitting back in front of the TV and rooting for OU to beat Nebraska

Now, OU doesn’t even play Nebraska every year and there are two different divisions in the Big 12

 You can keep it!………

Oh, yeah, in case you’re interested, Bob Stoops, the OU head coach, has a yearly salary of Three Million dollars!!!……. One person!……. This doesn’t include his staff and all the other lower minions involved in the program

No wonder Oklahoma has problems keeping qualified teachers and financing education

.

So-o-o-o, as far as I am concerned, I wish Texas would have run the score up by another 40 points or so

Maybe enough Oklahomans would get fed-up enough with the program to at least cut “Stoops-So-Low” salary and hire another one or two good teachers

. We need ‘em

..

  2. Ouch……………………….

  3. I Agree with you MR, (As you know allready) About the college sports thing.
The reason as I see it is so many of our wonderful society think the world revolves around sports.
Doesn’t matter what sports just as long as it’s some people running some object from one point to another weather it be a ball, puck, stick, or them selves.
The reason as I see it is most people are so shallow when it comes to the everyday world around them the only thing that they can understand is sports, because the rest of the world is too deep for them. So there fore the sports world has a better draw than the rest of the world.
Hence A college coach can make 3 Mil Per Yr. But a teacher has to go on foodstamps just to survive.
Doesn’t that tell you all where the general publics priorities are.

  4. I don’t dispute any of your comments (my wife was a teacher for several years, so I know all about that). I still enjoy sports for the entertainment value. That’s exactly what big time sports has become. And yes, I get sick of the whining and bitching of multi-millionares that get paid dearly for what they enjoy doing. However, I look at it the same way I do movies or rock concerts or whatever, it’s just another form of entertainment. And yes, people around these parts tend to take it way too seriously. Just thought I’d put in my two cents because the sports section of this blog is a little light. Now, back to watching my Yankess try to salvage their season.

  5. Another thing I agree with MRambler is about Stoops. Some associates of mine were at a party he was attending after the 2000 regular season. I’m told he demanded for his contract be rewritten before the National Championship game with Florida State. If they had refused, he had threatened to resign. Nice guy. But, I’m still a born & bred Sooner fan. Fickle how fate is sometimes, isn’t it?

  6. I think I was a little too harsh in assuming a lack of interest in sports on our blog users behalf and I apologize for making such a decision for all the users just because no one had, until this time, addressed any posts in the sports arena…..

Now, don’t get me too wrong, I do enjoy it when the Sooners win – I just don’t have a heart attack if I miss a game on TV or radio and they lose…. I do still back all my other comments….

I enjoy your input and also agree that sports, to me, are, on occcasion, very entertaining (especially the World Series), and I’m certainly not in favor of restricting sports posts, or any posts for that matter, that’s what makes this blog interesting…..

So-o-o, let the opinions fly and I’m sure someone will sort all of them out……

  7. I’m a sports fan, and particularly into baseball, but I’m very sympathetic to the concerns expressed here. Would it be too much for people to show a little perspective? I mean, people are all mopey about losing to Texas but don’t bat an eye when 30K+ are killed in a Pakistani earthquake.

As an OU grad, I like to see them do well, but I definitely don’t live and die by how the football W-L record.

Just about everything is more important than sports, but our society needs the
diversion. Here’s a scary thought–what would all those Oakland Raider fans be
doing if it weren’t for football.
