John Prine…….

I heard from a friend that John Prine won something at the Grammy’s, but I didn’t get any details….. If he did, it’s about time, he’s been a favorite artist of mine since his first album in the ’70’s….. If anyone knows the details, I would like to be filled-in….. I don’t watch much TV (regular or cable), so any info would be nice…..

I do know that if you are a musician and don’t have a copy of his album “Sweet Revenge” you are sorely on “The Losing End” (Neil Young)….. I mean, if you haven’t heard “Dear Abbey”,”Granpa was a Carpenter”, or “Please Don’t Bury Me “ and not liked them, you’re severely biased or not much of a musician in the first place….. You may not like the semi-country style (although he has his own style as far as I am concerned), but you gotta love his lyrics and the sound and delivery of his voice…. I checked Amazon.com and they only have one copy, but claimed more were on the way and the price was only $9.95…. Can’t beat that…. I don’t have the time to hassle with a link for you, but just go to amazon, popular music, and search for John Prine….. It’ll be worth your time…..

To me, he just as original and fits into Rock just as much as Dylan, Donovan, and the rest of the Folk-Rock artists…. He was definitely ahead of his time and now, maybe he’s got some recognition for it….. Oh, yeah, his new album is great too, but “Sweet Revenge” is one of my all-time favorites…. Not a bad track on it….

Oh, one more thing, Jek I’m going to incorporate your lyric suggestions into “A Season’s Song” …. I’ve revised the referenced post with the new lyrics….. Check it out if you’re interested or wait ’til this Christmas season…… They are printed in bold and italics…… There may be further changes by then……. Thanks….

  1. I also bought his first album in the 70’s. The only CD I have is a compilation disc (which coincidentally ,I listened to about 3 weeks ago). Don’t know if I would put him up there with Dylan or not, but definitely had a unique style & some good material. I remember seeing him on “Austin City Limits”. He was quite entertaining. It would be fun to see him in a small club. I would compare him to Louden Wainwright (Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road).

  2. What ever happened to that “Ramblen Cowboy Jew” Jack Elliot?

  3. Don’t forget about the other “Cowboy Jew”, Kinky Friedman.

  4. No one’s answered my question yet….. Did John Prine get any awards at the Grammy’s, or did none of our group watch them?…. Oh, yeah, I guess I could search the net….. I was just trying to be lazy and suck the info out of one of our vast audience….. I guess I could just go for a swim in the Anon River, but you have to watch for those County Mounties around J.J.Ville…..

  5. Sorry, No luck from J.J.Ville did not pertake of that broadcast cept for Macca, Gotta say Mac doin’ Helter Skelter Live….I’m Speechless!!!

  6. Cowboy Jack Elliot, I hear him all the time on Sirius Roadhouse, and as for Kinky He is busy with his campaign for Gov of Texas. And doing quite well actually.

  7. J.J., is that good speechless or bad speechless on the Helter Skelter thing?

  8. I stopped watching the Grammy Awards Show sometime in the 80’s. Usually not worth sitting through several hours to see 15 minutes or so I cared about. Just my two cents. Just another one of those “getting old” things I guess.

  9. Extremely Good Speechless!!

  10. Best Contemporary Folk Album.
