Oklahoma Geography

Since the last “Educational Quiz” was geographically based, I saw a story on the news about this couple that visited every city, town, ville, ghost town, and hole-in-the-wall in the state of Oklahoma….. It took them six years and over 32,000 miles to do it….. Why?….. I don’t know…. They were retired, but, have since went back to work…. I think just to get some excitement back into their lives….. No doubt!….. They stated that while their friends were taking vacations all over the US and abroad, they believed touring Oklahoma was a lot more fun….. Doesn’t take much to amuse some people….. I think I’ll take my next vacation to Slapout, Oklahoma – Population – 6……. Anyone want to come along?……

  1. I guess there are no takers?….. I guess me and the five residents of Slapout will party hardy by ourselves (one’s gone on a fishing trip to the great Northwest)…..

  2. Hey Rambler, I found a town with a smaller population than the one you bring up. This story is from ‘Oklahoma Living’ magazine.

One may find a slight correlation between the plot in the old sitcom ‘Green Acres’ and the story behind the origin of the town Nowhere, Oklahoma, located just south of Fort Cobb Lake. In the early 1970s, a couple moved to what is now known as Nowhere. The couple bought and operated Ben’s Boathouse. As in Green Acres, the lady of the house was accustomed to the large, metropolitan city life in California. Farm livin’ was notthe life for her. Hence, she coined the name “Nowhere,” simply because that is exactly where she felt she was! Her husband must have had a sense of humor because painted on the water tower beside the store reads, “Nowhere, Okla.” inbold red letters. After spending several years in Oklahoma, the couple resolved to make their wayback to California. (“Honey I love you, but give me Park Avenue!”) It was in 1979 when they sold the store to current owner, Jerry Howell. Jerry decided to keep the original name of Nowhere. As the lake area developed and visitors began coming from all across the state and country, the name caught on and soon became a hit. The boat house is now a bait house and convenience store. The only people who occupy this small town are Jerry, his wife and daughter. As Jerry says, “Now days, going to the lake (Ft. Cobb) and going to Nowhere go hand-in-hand.” If you “just adore a penthouse view,” then this may not be the place for you. Because in Nowhere, Oklahoma, there is not a post office and you more than likely will not find the town located on any map. If traveling to Ft. Cobb Lake, just ask anyone around and they will know exactly where Nowhere is located. Most visitors find they cannot visit this landmark without having their picture taken in front of the water tower. Be sure to take your camera so you can prove to your friends that you have really been to Nowhere, Oklahoma. “Keep Manhattan, just give me that country side!” Nowhere is serviced by Caddo Electric Cooperative.
