I believe we’re speaking of the Gordian Knot. The priests of ancient Phrygia decided that the next guy who came into town on an ox-cart would be their new king. When Midas rode in on his father’s (Gordius’) ox-cart, he became the king. He tied the cart to a post with some supernatural help from Zeus, using a knot which could not be untied. An oracle prophesized that whoever untied the knot would rule what we now call Asia Minor. When Alexander the Great showed up in 333 b.c., he tried to untie the knot, finally slicing the knot in half with his sword. He then fulfilled the prophecy by conquering Asia Minor. The story of the Gordian Knot is a metaphor for solving an intractable problem with a simple solution.

And that is correct. According to a documentary on PBS the knot was probably used on the yoke of a cart and had to be strong and flexible….a very special knot.
As a parable, the Big Book offers this; “to cut the knot is to evade a difficulty, or get out of it in a summary manner”.
