Music Trivia 3.25.07

In 1966 this artist recorded his #1 and only hit. He recorded an album including a song called Saigon. He was involved in 2 shootings in the ‘70s and rumored to have been involved with the contras in 1988.

I think the “artist” of whom you speak is a bullet-headed boob who billed himself as SSgt. Barry Sadler. A high school drop-out, Sadler joined the U.S. Air Force at age 17, then joined the Army and served in Vietnam as a medic in the Green Berets. He later served time in prison for a fatal shooting, and upon his release, moved to Guatemala City. It was there, in 1989, that Sadler himself was fatally shot. According to Soldier of Fortune magazine, he was assassinated for his role in arming the Contras, but it’s more likely the wound was accidentally self-inflicted while he was showing off for a female companion.

  2. Not Oly North?

Sheesh, all these 60s questions. May as well throw in some Bach, Handel, and Mendelssohn.

  4. Calm down HS there is some new stuff coming, I had to start somewhere.

  5. I must admit that is wierd one to start on, J.J……

  6. Anyone remember the comeback to that song? Also the only number one this artist(? )recorded. He was of the folk rock persuasion.

  7. Ok, 4 points to Mr. The Grey For the answer SSgt Barry Sadler altough some of your facts differ from the account that I have, My Text shows no Jail Time, yes he was wounded in Guatemala but passed away from a heart attack later in the states. No Subtraction for that. As suggested by HS there will be questions concerning newer artists/bands as well as older ones, MR. Remember who your dealing with here, you would expect me to come up with one that wasn’t “Wierd” I learned from the best. Sunn, Please elaborate, My text shows that was the only #1 that he had.

Wikipedia says that Sadler was in a coma for several months following the shooting in Guatemala City before dying at his mother’s home in Murfreesboro, TN. I guess that doesn’t preclude a heart attack.
If the answer to Sunn’s question isn’t The Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag by Country Joe & The Fish, then I’m stumped.

  9. I was not referring to a follow up, but rather a rebuff.
No, RTG, I was not thinking of CJ Fish (although I was a fan)
I was referring to “Eve of Destruction” by folk rocker Barry MaGuire.
