MR’s De-Educational Quiz – Independence
First of all – Happy 4th of July – Now let’s see how much you know about Independence….. Here’s five questions valued from one (1) Ace to Five (5) Aces……
1 Ace : Who was this John Hancock dude anyway?……
2 Aces: Who was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence?……
3 Aces: Independence Day only became commonplace after what war?
4 Aces: What date did Congress pass a law making Independence Day a Federal Holiday?…..
5 Aces: During early 4th of July celebrations, just before lunch, some politician or lawyer would speak challenging England to a fight and berate the King and say he was a skunk…. This practice was known as?…….. (This one is a toughie)…… -HURRAH for the USA –
July 3rd, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Hancock was president of the continental congress at the time. He was the first one to sign the declaration of independence (and the only one to actually sign it on the 4th of July) which was written by Thomas Jefferson. That’s #1 and #2.
For #3 I can only assume you are looking for the Revolutionary War.
I don’t know #4 and I would call #5 “Rubbing It In.”
July 3rd, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Izard strikes first again…… You are correct on #1 and #2, which gives you three (3) Aces, but it wasn’t the Revolutionary War for #3 and “rubbing it in” not right for #5…… So-o-o, that leaves twelve (12) Aces still up for grabs……
I will post a point summary soon……
July 3rd, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Are you looking for WW2 as the answer to #3? That’s when it became a paid Federal holiday, and also when Vickburg, MS started recognizing the date again (it was captured by Union forces on July 4th, 1863, which is the only reason I know this tidbit of trivia).
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:00 pm
I should read…. The answer to #4 is 1941.
July 4th, 2007 at 1:22 am
Independence Day became commonplace after the CiVil War. The U.S. Congress made it an official holiday in 1870.
July 4th, 2007 at 6:04 am
All answers for the 3 Aces question are wrong so far (which war)…… On the 4 Aces I asked for the date, not just the year….. One of you two, RtG or HS, have the correct year, but for 4 Aces I need mm/dd/yyyy…… We should all study our history….. I’m giving no hints yet other than I know my answers are correct and didn’t come from MR’s Fuzzy Memory files……. Still Twelve (12) Aces up for grabs……
July 4th, 2007 at 7:41 am
It was recognized as an actual holiday in 1870, though as to the date…. pthhhsszzz. Whatever. How about 3 July 1870? It was made a paid Federal holiday in 1941, however.
Also, I like RtG’s answer for #3. I’m curious what the “official” answer is.
July 4th, 2007 at 12:13 pm
Well, you do have the correct year now, and, I will say that it was before the 4th of July, 1870…… As for more hints and answers, you’ll have to wait a bit…… Let’s give the rest of the MR Community time to respond – If they want to……..
July 4th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
I have a guess: these quiz questions are from the inside of the music score shown in the image of the post above. Do I get any points for that?
July 4th, 2007 at 12:28 pm
Wrong-o! Jek…… The music score jpeg did come from the same source of the questions – if that helps you any……. You get a 2 of puppy-feet for your guess……
July 4th, 2007 at 8:37 pm
RTG, I believe you are too specific with your answers.
You:
A. Are a college history professor
B. Have a stupendous historical library
C. Have an IQ over 200
D. Use the Internet extensively to find the answers
E. None of the Above.
No offense meant.
July 4th, 2007 at 11:34 pm
Well you see, Sunn, back in the days of yore, we used to have these things which bound together page after page of paper with printing on them–we called them books–swear to god…you can look it up on the internet. You could also acquire a set of these “books” called an “encyclopedia”, which included knowledge on a wide variety of subjects.
I know it hardly seems fair to use one of these “encyclopedias”, but for some reason known only to them, the quizmasters on MRambler Central have decided that it’s more noble to look up the answers by turning pages in these “books” than by tapping on a computer keyboard. Go figure.
No offense taken.
July 4th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Trust me, my IQ couldn’t possibly be larger than my hat size.
July 5th, 2007 at 6:26 am
Size 3 Hat – Size 48 Coat, eh?….. That’s an old Roofer’s joke…… No offense….. I do think looking it up in books is cooler – reminds me of the defense lawyer for Captain Kirk…… I don’t think the Internet was outlawed, just using Google for instant references…… Well, RtG, crack some more of those splines….. There’s still Twelve (12) Aces to be acquired…..
July 5th, 2007 at 3:09 pm
all i ever said was “lets not google”……too easy. other than that………..whatever. but, books are cool. they are nice to hold, like a simile.
speaking of books, for a strange and interesting read try “Gould’s Book of Fish”, Richard Flanagan…..dark, strange, and even humorous. not for the faint of heart.

#3.The war of independence which was concluded with the Treaty of Paris 09/03/1783 After that date it was made an “Official Holiday” #4 On June 29, 1938, by joint resolution of Congress (HJ resolution No. 551; pub. res. no. 127), the Fourth of July was legislated as a Federal holiday with pay for its employees:On May 13, 1941, a “Holiday Leave for Per Diem Employees of the District of Columbia” amendment was enacted. #5 an “Oratory or Oration”? Look that up in your Funk and Wagnols, Which is what I did.
July 5th, 2007 at 3:35 pm
Sticking up for RtG I beleive He is in incredibly bright individual who paid too much attention in school and actually Learned something, he also as I have said before has too much time on his hands up there in the mountains. He also plays a hell of a Flute.
July 5th, 2007 at 11:47 pm
Even without Google, I think the internet should be off limits. How do you find anything without a search engine anyway?
July 6th, 2007 at 6:50 am
J.J., you need to turn-in your “Funk” because they “Flunk”…… ALL of your answers are incorrect-o…… You and HS are hung-up on when it became a PAID Federal Holiday, and if you read the above comments, you’ll see it has already been established that it became a holiday in 1870, before July 4, 1870, I need the mm/dd to go with that for #4….. I award you Three (3) 2’s of Puppy-Feet just for GP….. I tend to agree with Jek on the Internet thing….. We’ll have to put it to a vote of the Community…..
If there are no more correct answers by tomorrow, I’ll start posting hints…..
July 6th, 2007 at 9:13 am
The Internet isn’t going to do any good anyway with MR asking the questions.
July 6th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
good point izard, besides the one directed towards mr… there is a way to construct quizez so real research is required. makes it harder for the quizzer though (and harder for the quizee too). i found that out dealing with a certain quizee. had to change the way i asked a question which also limited my resources.
July 6th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
I take it, Izard, that you doubt my answers…… I assure you they are 100% correct, and, you will agree with me once you hear them…..
I guess I’ve accomplished my task – All the Community’s skulls have filled with mush…… I can see why History repeats itself – Nobody learns it the first time around…… Even I knew the answers to the first 3 questions without my reference source, of course, I’m somewhat of a History buff – Like to know how and why things evolved……
Okay, Okay, I can’t stand to see all of you suffer….. Here’s a couple of hints….. 1. All of the info used in this quiz came from an Official Government site…… 2. WE FOUGHT ENGLAND IN MORE THAN ONE WAR! – We even tried to invade Canada and England burned Washington to the ground!…… Anyone ever hear the song “Battle of New Orleans” by Johnny Horton?….. Go, Andrew Jackson, Go!…… That should give someone Three (3) Aces…….
July 6th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
I don’t doubt your answers. I just know that answering your questions is never quite as simple as it seems. I’ve fallen victim to that misconception many times.
July 6th, 2007 at 8:47 pm
I guess it’s the War of 1812, then.
July 6th, 2007 at 8:50 pm
As far as what references may be used in the quizes, I’ve never completely understood the rules, so I just rely on what’s present in my mush-brain. This is doubtless why I have absolutely no clue on quite a few of them.
July 6th, 2007 at 8:51 pm
MR, since you’re so smug about history knowledge, what two famous Americans died on 4 July 1826?
July 7th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
HS comes through with Three (3) Aces…… After we fought England for a second time, Americans decided to respect our hard won freedom more and celebrate the 4th of July as Independence Day…… Nine (9) Aces left……. Clue for #4 – It was on the 23rd….. Clue for #5 – Something you would do to annoy a huge cat…..
HS, I’m not trying to be smug about history, but, I am interested in prior events that have led us to the current situation we are all in…… As far as your question – I guess you wanted to tie this all together because Thomas Jefferson, the main author of the DoI, and John Adams, another signer of the DoI, both died on 04JUL1826….. Both were also ex-Presidents of the USA……
July 7th, 2007 at 11:09 pm
Ok I’m gonna “Tub Out ” on this one and I bow to the superior intelect. I just did some old fashion reading in the F&W’s. I guess That is why teachers use quizzes/tests to give grades.
July 9th, 2007 at 6:54 am
I guess everyone’s had a chance at these and are ready to put this holiday behind them…… The answers for #4 and #5 are as follows:
Four (4) Aces: June 28, 1870 – I told you I had brain drain, I incorrectly gave the clue as the 23rd….. Sorry ’bout that…..
Five (5) Aces: “Twisting the Lion’s Tail”
Tomorrow I’ll post the point totals and hopefully I can find another quiz to post as my brain cells need re-charging….. PLEASE, Heal faster, Anon!…..
