Rockin’ Love Songs?

Okay, we all like the rockers. And we should admit we like love songs too. But what about love songs that are rockers? Is there such a thing?

Initially contemplating this I said that all love songs are slow. But thinking more about it, love songs should be more about a mood or the mood they put you in. With this new thinking, do you have any up-tempo love song that sets the proper mood?

Seems I have more questions than answers…. HELP! (The Beatles)

  1. What are you up to? You trying to write something?

My snot filled brain can’t think of a song but how about categories of love that might rock?

Not sure I like where you’re going with the “sets the proper mood” bit ;), but….

“Heaven” and “Wings” by The Golden Palominos (or actually anything off of Pure or This is How it Feels). Not really rocking so much as groovilicious and atmospheric.

  3. ” I Want To Hold Your Hand”
    “Honky Tonk Woman”
    “Mona”

Maybe we better define “love song”.

  4. Karen suggests “Little Egypt” by the Coasters.

  5. A certain song by Jimmy Buffett about getting drunk & a water bed.
Sorry, jek. I think you meant for this to be a serious post. I just couldn’t resist.

I don’t think any of us is on the same page. Anon’s suggestion is a good one.

  7. Definitely not on the same page here… but the pages are turning, so that’s not surprising.

HS: I’ve never heard of The Golden Palominos. Their stuff does seem suitable to “setting the mood”, though in a different way than I was intending. I think I was meaning expression of love or something.

Anon: What song is “Mona”? I wouldn’t call “Little Egypt” a love song, at least it doesn’t seem about love. Nice song though!

Sunn, I’m not sure if I can be too serious on the topic of love songs, though I will pose this:

Is a song about love a love song?

  8. Mona…..Rolling Stones……can’t remember the lyrics though….might be a love song,

“If a tree falls in the forest……….

  9. Tell you Mona what I’m gonna do,
build a house next door to you
    Maybe I’ll see you sometime
we can go kissing through the blinds

This was on the Rolling Stones “Now” album, which I believe was their third album. I’m not sure who wrote the song, but this was when they were doing a lot of blues covers. Sounds like a Bo Diddley song to me.

  10. C’mon jek. Give us your definition.

What about love forlorn? Something like Suzanne Vega’s “Songs in Red and Gray.” (Mostly) not terribly rocking, though. Half the hair metal power ballads do the same theme.

  12. Practically every rock song prior to the mid sixties could be considered a “love” song (lyrically speaking). Politics & social reform changed all that. Come to think of it, politics change about everything we embrace.

  13. Sunn, I owe you a definition. Here’s my thinking:

A love song is a song about one person’s love for another, in which all aspects are positive. It is absent of any harshness.

I suppose the effectiveness on the target lover is the real measure of love song value. I think most people apply song lyrics to their own situations, which makes the actual application of the definition a personal choice as to what is positive and harsh.

  14. Or as Jimmy Buffett refered to the song that Sunn refrenced in comment #5 “A love song from a Different Point of View” Also remember what Macca said, some are just “Silly love Songs”

  15. HS: I listened to the samples from the Vega album. Forlorn is right! Thanks.

JJ: Silly matches my definition. Paul should know, he’s churned out many-a-good love song over the years.

  16. OK, time to tidy up this thread. While looking out there, I found this discussion on Prog Rock love songs:

And finally, for the record: here’s the playlist for love song music night. Enjoy!
