A Weird New Years…..
To celebrate New Years, Oklahoma City has what it calls, “Opening Night” on New Year’s Eve….. Â This event takes place in the section of OKC called, “Bricktown”….. Â There’s music, food, entertainment, and fireworks….. Â This year they’ve got two headliner music acts – The Flaming Lips, which is an Oklahoma group that made it fairly big, and, get this, which I still don’t believe – Yoko Ono (I pronounce it “Oh-No”) and The Plastic Ono Band with Sean Lennon….. Â I’m speechless – I mean I didn’t think that there were more than a handful of people in the whole state of Oklahoma who had ever even heard of The Plastic Ono Band….. Â Maybe the ones that booked the gig have never heard her sing (I use the term loosely)….. Â On the other side – Why would anybody that’s internationally known want to perform in OKC?… Â Truth is definitely stranger than fiction….. Â I wouldn’t mind going just to check it out, but, at $120 a ticket, I think I’ll have to pass….. Â I do know they’re not advertising it much – I caught it on the news….. Â I’m going to check into it further as I would like to know just how this all came about – I’m stunned!…….

She having trouble getting a gig? Trying out new material in a very hip part of the country? What? What?

Don’t ask me, Anon!….. I mean, what is she doing even preforming?….. She was older than John Lennon and he would be 71 now!….. I’m sure you’re joking on the “Hip Part”, unless you were talking about the “hip bone’s connected to the leg bone”…… The most popular music you’re gonna find here is two kinds – Country and Western…. Not to say that we don’t have Rock, but, it is definitely in the minority……

I see you picked up on that also. I was wondering the same thing. Why? Is the rest of the world so bad that major stars, Just a minute, (hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha) sorry, would choose to spend a major holiday in OKC at some 2nd rate converted warehouse. also a buck 20 a ticket, have they lost their fargin minds!? Also I have heard cuts from the album that Sean just finished. (Calling the group Plastic Ono) and well lets just say………….I’m sorry I cannot think of anything other than it sucks. Even for today’s musical standards.

That’s the problem – Today’s Standard, if there is such a thing….. It is definitely not based on talent or originality…… I guess I’ll just remain “Living In The Past” (Jethro Tull)……Luckily, there is still one venue locally, The Blue Door, where I can go and hear live Blues, Country Rock, and great guitarists in a small one-on-one environment….. J.J. and I are going to hear Arlo Guthrie on March 8….. It doesn’t get much better than that for us old Rockers……

The music industry has always been driven by money, but for a brief period the companies were under the impression they could make money with bands we considered quality.
There are good bands out there. Porcupine Tree and Tool are both amazing bands, though they’ve both been around 20 years.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, HS….. ….And, I believe that there are new, young bands out there that generate great music – from Blues to Classical….. The problem is they have to be in it for the music and not the money, which is how a real artist should be anyway, but, it’s hard to survive in this World today without funds, and, you need a following and venues to play live….. One Good Thing about OKC (mark this down, as I usually don’t compliment OKC) is that we have such a Venue in The Blue Door….. It’s a place for musicians to hear musicians on almost a one-to-one basis…..

May I again recommend Jesse Sykes and The Sweet Here Afters. You can find her on Utube.

The one song I listened to was very Jefferson Airplane-ish.
December 28th, 2011 at 11:28 am
I’ll put them on my New Year’s Revolutions list, Anon….. Jefferson Airplane-ish….eh?….. Could be interesting…….
December 28th, 2011 at 11:38 am
That was just a first impression. I’m sure anon could be more informative.

OK, I just gave a 2 hour listen. The vocals remind me of Phoebe Snow, Very Blusey. The Band is clean, not over driving. Good clean solos, drums mixed properly. I feel that they could go places other than just the NW coast. The problem is they don’t fit into what the Music industry is shoving down our throats as “Whats Hot” I feel they are 10 times better than a lot of newer acts out today. I hope that they do not sell out to the industry and try to fit in just to get big. Anon Good Pick. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I’ve seen the Flaming Lips in concert before — good stuff!

Sykes is a bit of an anomaly . She has a real chanteuse, Blues, smokey voice….probably cause she smokes….has to help. She and “The Here After” are classified as Psy Rock which is why it may sound something like Jeff Air Plane. Although……all those country licks on that big Gretch and the Duane Eddy twang takes it some other place. (Duane Eddy for those of us old enough to remember and I believe another passing this year. Remember the Peter Gun Theme by Duane?)
She is a local from Tacoma Wa. but I heard she moved back to the Midwest. She has 4 or 5 CDs out. The music can sound folk, country, rock. “Marble Sons” more rock. Nice to hear something distinctive for a change.

I agree I got sort of a country rock feel, I don’t see the “Psy Rock” That is what happens when the whomever try to label something, Good is good no matter what you call it.
Ttop: My god we had given up on you had a funeral and everything. lol
😉 welcome back. I agree the flaming lips are good I have heard some of their stuff on Stern and caught some on Utube. We (I) just don’t get Yoko and Sean. and why OKC.

After listening again I could really hear Jefferson Airplane. I think it was the atmospheric trip. And the Phoebe Snow in Sykes’ voice.
Must be something good in Oklahoma if it spawned the Flaming Lips.
Didn’t Phoebe pass on this year?

It’s gonna be a GREAT 2012!….. Two of our dearly missed Community members have checked back in with us….. Huskysooner, on a regular basis, it seems, surfaced a few weeks ago (Could have been a few Months, I’ve lost track of time), anyhow, HS is back, and, now we hear from long lost TTop, whose musical Comments/Posts have been sorely missed….. It’s a MRambler Community ReUnion for the New Year!….. Enjoy!……
