Ganesh is the only elephant-form I know of. Vishnu took the form of a tortoise at one time, but I’ve never seen them both together like you’re describing. I know very little about Hinduism (from the Simpsons no doubt), so this is only a guess.

  2. Ganesh is not the answer I was looking for but it is a name I have also heard. I will have to check it out.

” The elephant that supports the world is called_________ and the tortoise which supports the elephant is called__________.”

  3. Nope. Ganesh is the Brahman equivalent of God. The elephant with all the arms, not the armless elephant that supports the world. In some religions it is eight elephants that support the world which seems more reasonable to me.

The elephant of whom you speak is Maha-pudma, and the tortoise is Chukwa.
In Hindu belief, the one supreme god is Ishvara. Ganesh ( or Ganesha ) is a Deva, or demigod. Other Devas include Hanuman, Rama, Krishna, Vishnu, etc. In some branches of Hinduism there exists as many as 330 million Devas.
Old RtG practiced Kundalini Yoga for a time before he became enlightened.

In “A Brief History Of Time”, Stephen Hawking relates the story of a scientist giving a lecture on astronomy, when an old woman in the back of the room, declares the lecture to be nonsense. She says that the earth is a flat plate supported by a tortoise. When the scientist asks what the tortoise is standing on, she says, “You’re very clever, young man, very clever. But it’s turtles all the way down !”

  6. Go Randalf. Gotta give 10 points for completeness and exactness of answer. Hawking is a bit of a smart ass. Good to see him taken down a peg or two.
