  1. #1 by Randalf the Grey

” Here’s the right valiant Cornish man, who slew the giant Cormoran.” But Jack also slew six other giants in this ancient English fairy tale. There was Gallagantua, Blunderbore and Thunderdell, who said ” Fi fi fo fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman, Be he alive or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make me bread.” Alas, I know not the names of the other three. Jack also slew Lucifer himself–he was a baaad dude. It’s a shame he’s not still around–for a purse of gold, we could have Osama’s head on a stick.

  2. Right-o for five points……Galligantus…….A giant who lived with Hocus-Pocus in an enchanted castle. By his magic he changed men and women into dumb animals, amongst which was the duke’s daughter, changed into a roe.
With a cap that made Jack invisible, he went to the castle and read an inscription that said, “Whoever can this trumpet blow, will cause the giant’s overthrow”. He blew the trumpet, the castle fell down. He slew the giant and married the duke’s daughter.
Another story/myth of a trumpet blowing down walls. Apparently this kind of myth also occurs in other cultures including Africa. Robert Graves wrote a excellent scary short story based on this myth called “The Shout” which was made into a very bad movie years ago.

  3. The myth in Africa does not involve a trumpet. The myth there is about certain individuals who can kill or destroy with a “shout”.

  4. RTG, Another fabulous prize is in the mail.

  5. Randalf, You really need to get out more. You are spending too much time cooped up and raising the bar way too high for us mere mortals.
